Hannah Atkinson was enjoying a teaching abroad experience in Gibraltar, located on the southern end of the Iberian Peninsula. That was before the World Health Organization called the rapidly-spreading coronavirus (COVID-19) a pandemic on March 11. Hannah’s mother, Amy rushed to get her daughter home, as she just learned she had a tight window to fly out of Gibraltar or face not getting home to the U.S. until August.
Amy put her faith in The Travel Team to help get her daughter home safely and quickly. Travel experts, Ronald and Toni were ready to do whatever it takes to make this happen and were able to find a flight from Madrid to New York for Amy’s daughter. The trip back home to the U.S. was not an easy one. The airport in Madrid was a 6-hour drive away from Gibraltar and there was no available public transportation to get her there. Toni reached out to Travel Team partner, DMC Made for Spain, and asked if they could assist. Within an hour, the president of the company immediately had one of her agents assist Toni and before she knew it, Amy’s daughter had a direct ride arranged to the Madrid airport.
Toni and Ronald made sure Amy’s daughter was safe throughout her commute to the airport, advising the family of the driver’s name and number, so they knew exactly when their daughter was picked up and dropped off at the airport. Once the toughest part of getting to the airport was over, Amy’s daughter had a pleasant flight to JFK with only about 8 people on the entire plane. After about an 8- hour flight, Hannah boarded a connecting flight to Buffalo – the last leg of her journey back home.
Once arriving in the Queen City, Hannah was welcomed with open arms by her family. And her mother, Amy could finally breathe a sigh of relief. To make her return even more special, Hannah arrived just in time to celebrate her 23rd birthday with her family – a birthday gift she’ll never forget.
